Artists and their Mothers
/I wrote this piece for Mother's Day about artists whose mothers served as their muse. It was just published by Art & Object. https://www.artandobject.com/slideshows/8-artists-who-painted-their-mothers-muses-and-metaphors
Here you will find postings of recently published articles, book, film and exhibition reviews written by me. Occasionally I'll toss in a link to something of interest to practicing writers, artists, and filmmakers.

Spellbinder Lit Mag has been promoting my essay, Nobody Knows I Have a Brother on Instagram. The full essay is one of the few nonfiction pieces in their current anthology. Since I don't pay much attention to my Instagram account I missed it. https://www.instagram.com/p/C5vJQ2wohSi/ I will be taking part in a virtual public reading for this issue of the U.K. - based anthology on Sunday April 21st 3Pm-5pm or 10am-12pm EST
The exhibition O'Keeffe & Moore: Giants of Modern Art currently at the Montreal Museum of Modern Art was a revelation. You can read my review here in Art & Object: https://www.artandobject.com/news/discovering-shared-inspiration-georgia-okeeffe-and-henry-moore
My essay, Nobody Knows I Have a Brother was one of only 3 nonfiction pieces included in the Spring issue of the literary anthology, Spellbinder. You can order a hardcopy here: https://www.spellbindermag.com/issues/spring-2024/
Happy Spring!
I am so pleased that the Artist's Network is honoring my friend, the indomitable Suzanne Benton, by linking her current exhibition at the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut with the feature article I wrote about her that they published in print in 2022.

Filmmakers find a cornucopia of stories in the lives of artists that seems to be bottomless. I periodically write about some of them for Art & Object. My latest suggestions for films to see about art was published today:

My article on the art world's most hotly debated curmudgeon, critic Jerry Saltz, was just published today on Art & Object.

Artist's Magazine is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. I have been writing for them during the last 10 of those years. It is one of the few publications that still puts out a high quality print on paper edition 6 times a year. This is one of my recent articles on indigenous artists whose work is finally getting the attention that they deserve. It was also published here in digital format.

A little music for this writers ears in my inbox today:
Hello Cynthia Close,

If it is still available, we ask that you send us a Word Doc of the piece and a short bio at your earliest convenience. If your work is not available, please let us know as soon as you can.
And, again, we’re so excited at the prospect of publishing your work!

Fashion played a huge role in communicating identity and details of character of the subjects in the portraits by the great American painter John Singer Sargent. MFA, Boston has mounted a fabulous exhibition that examines this aspect of Sargent's career, presenting the actual clothes his sitters wore, alongside the paintings. I learned so much about his process and exciting details about the people who he painted in writing this review for Art & Object.

In writing Emmi Whitehorse: Profile of an Artist for Artist's Magazine all my preconceptions connected to the descriptor Native Artist no longer apply. Her ethereal abstractions float like dreams. My piece, describing her method, has just been republished by the Artist's Network.

My profile of four contemporary Indigenous artists originally appeared in the print edition of Artist's Magazine. Their unique perspectives on Native identity was an eye opener for me. It has now been republished on the Artist's Network.

The rewriting of the art historical cannon recognizing the true value of women has risen to heights that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime. Art & Object has republished an earlier piece that coincides with my my recent review of Making Her Mark at the Baltimore Museum of Art. My eldest granddaughter, who is an art major at Concordia, will be a future contributor to this ongoing precedent.
