Boston's ICA and Simone Leigh at the Venice Biennial

/

My article on Simone Leigh and the Boston ICA's sponsorship of her presentation at this year's Venice Biennial is in the most recent issue of Art New England.

https://artnewengland.com/march-april-2022_toc/

Unfortunately you have to buy a copy of the magazine to read the article. But you can also see her work in Boston after the Biennial. No need to travel to Venice.

New "immersive" lit mag Neon Door

/

The editors of the experimental digital lit mag Neon Door seem to have fixed the bugs in the navigation of the site. It is now accessible to folks, like me, who use the Firefox browser and is a bit more intuitive than the first, confounding, iteration. Although I'm not sure what the point is or how this enhances your perception of the art or words presented. I'd love to get your feedback about the site. Contact me. Let me know your thoughts.

Artists Under the Influence

Every artist is influenced by those who came before them but, for some, that influence is more obvious or more profound than others. I was surprised to find some early, and lesser-known precursors to famous works in my research for the article in Art & Object that was published today, Valentine’s Day, 2022.

On Meeting Alexander Calder

/

After submitting my essay On Meeting Alexander Calder to a gazillion literary journals (maybe not a gazillion, maybe 10) It was accepted to two, The Chicago Quarterly and the San Antonio Review. While the Quarterly is more prestigious, the SAR is more active on social media, and I didn't find out about the Chicago acceptance till after I accepted the SAR offer, so here it is:

James McNeill Whistler and The Woman in White

/

The American-born artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) and Irish-born model Joanna Hiffernan (1839–1886) met in 1860 and began a close professional and personal relationship that lasted for two decades. Bringing together for the first time nearly all of Whistler’s depictions of Hiffernan, The Woman in White explores their partnership and the iconic works of art resulting from their life together.
